Parent & Guest Orientation
It's your first real day as a member of the Bulldog family, and we're so happy to have you!
While your student is meeting other first-years and learning about housing, financial aid, and how to register for classes during their orientation, we're pleased to offer you a Parent & Guest Orientation program with professionals from the Division of Student Life. We'll be available to answer your questions and help you navigate the changes about happen in just a few short weeks!
IMPORTANT: you and your student will not have the same schedule during the day! You should plan to be done with the parent & guest program by 12:00PM, but your student will not be done until 3:30PM-4:30PM. You are welcome to wander the campus, or to leave to explore Duluth and return when your student is finished with their registration. More details about the exact schedule will be posted closer to Orientation dates.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Where do we park?
Parking is available in Lot G, on the St. Marie Street side of campus near the football field. Look for the Orientation banners.
Will we be with our students all day?
No. After the College Welcome, you will split from your student and begin the specialized Parent & Guest program. The students will receive information about many of the same topics as you will, but in a targeted way.
Will our student receive lunch?
Yes! Your student will have lunch in Superior Dining, our dining center. You will be on your own for lunch, whether you choose to eat on campus or somewhere else.
Can we talk to our students during the day?
We strongly recommend that you allow your student to take the lead in their orientation and registration process. Not only does it foster stronger independence earlier in their development, but it also ensures that you and the University are both in compliance with FERPA regulations. However, should you need to reach your student in an emergency, of course you will be able to locate them. And texting is always an option if your student needs a consult!
What does my student need to bring with?
Your student will need a photo ID in order to get their UCard, their UMN identification. You may also need to bring paperwork related to financial aid or other processes. You will receive notices from those offices if you need to provide information at orientation.
