01/01/19 Public Safety Advisory

January 1, 2019

On January 1, 2019 at 9:01pm, officers from the UMD Police Department responded to a report of a male on the UMD campus who had made suicidal threats and was in possession of a firearm. The male had reportedly disclosed this information to an acquaintance, who then called 911.

Law enforcement officers from the Duluth Police Department, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, Minnesota State Patrol, and the Hermantown Police Department assisted with a search for the male on the UMD campus and other possible locations.

Within minutes, the UMD SAFE-U alert system was activated to notify the UMD community of this incident.

At 9:35pm, the male was located by officers outside of the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium (1023 University Dr.) where he was taken into custody without incident. The male was not in possession of a firearm at the time, and no firearm was located in the area.

The male, who has no known connection to UMD, was transported to a local hospital and then to the St. Louis County Jail where he was booked on related charges.

At this time, it is believed that there are no other suspects involved and that there were no threats made by the male toward UMD or anyone connected to it. Investigation into this incident is ongoing.
