Mission Statement

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning serves the UMD teaching community by providing collaborative leadership, programming, scholarship, and other resources for fostering meaningful student learning.

Vision Statement

The UMD Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning provides support and guidance for the campus teaching community to develop high quality and innovative teaching. This vision is realized by acquiring new knowledge and skills that will facilitate learning as well as by finding and enhancing resources to support exemplary teaching and learning activities. The Center is faculty-led, collaborative, and inclusive in achieving its mission.

More specifically, the Center is sought out by all who are involved in teaching across campus to:

  1. interact within and across disciplines and programs about teaching and learning issues

  2. access new knowledge, skills and resources for teaching more effectively (e.g., high impact practices, flipped classrooms, active learning, online or hybrid classes)

  3. learn how to effectively integrate technology to support and enhance student learning

  4. receive one-on-one consultations and facilitate peer evaluations to improve teaching skills

  5. receive support for integrating community-based learning opportunities for students

  6. support efforts for research and writing related to the scholarship of teaching and learning

  7. improve the teaching and learning process through meaningful assessment

  8. navigate the ever evolving terrain of teaching in college learning environments

  9. support colleges and departments in their efforts to enhance teaching and learning within their units
