Final Week of National Nutritional Month
The focus for the last and final week of National Nutrition Month is SNACKS!
Come mid morning or mid afternoon, hunger can arise and be a major deterrent to a focused and productive day. However, if we nourish our bodies with a great snack, it will help to propel us through the day and also lessen our chance to overeat at the main meals of the day because we won’t be overly hungry. Alyssa Hammitt, UMD Dining Services dietitian, explains that the 2 components that make up a great snack are protein and carbohydrate. The carbohydrate provides energy and the protein helps us to feel full and satisfied.
Amanda Joyce, UMD employee Health and Wellbeing dietitian, likes to snack on yogurt and trail mix. “This snack includes plain Greek yogurt, which has protein to make you feel full longer and calcium for bone health. Topping the yogurt with a trail mix including nuts, dried cherries, unsweetened apple chips, and dark chocolate chips makes it a satisfying treat! This trail mix includes heart healthy fats, antioxidants, fiber, and lots of crunch.”
While at UMD, Hammitt chooses cottage cheese and a fruit cup from the new Grab & Go Station at the Food Court when she’s feeling hungry between meals. Cottage cheese is a great source of calcium and protein to keep you feeling full. The fruit cup provides energy and is loaded with Vitamins A, C, and fiber to make a great midday pick-me-up.
